Eating fried cod fillet Dar Filettaro in Santa Barbara is one of those things that a Roman or a tourist visiting Rome should do at least once in their life. It is an unforgettable culinary experience, embellished with the characteristic atmosphere of true Catholicism. Er Filettaro, as they say in Rome, is located in the center, at Largo dei Librari, 88, in a side street off Via dei Giubbonari, the street that leads from Campo dei Fiori to Via Arenula. Next to the small church of Santa Barbara, from which it takes its name. This small trattoria, whose sign, to avoid any doubt, says “Cod fillet”, has been charming the palates of Romans and travelers from all over the world for almost a century with just one specialty: pounded and fried cod fillet, typical of the Roman culinary tradition. We eat fried cod fillet at the pizzeria while waiting for pizza along with the surplus, courgette flowers and croquettes, and it never goes to waste among the fried fish for Christmas dinner.
Politicians, artists, cardinals and even Pope Pius XII have always been drawn to the Filettaro di Santa Barbara. It is said that Pope Pacelli often sent his personal waiter there to bring him a delicious fried fillet.
Just looking through the glass door you notice the atmosphere, and then the waiter calling the customers to sit down is a real treat.
As the name suggests, its specialty is cod fillet, pounded and fried, perhaps with chicory. You can eat them inside (they cost 7 euros) or take them with you (6 euros) and enjoy them while walking, sitting on the stairs of the church of Santa Barbara or at the foot of the statue of Giordano Bruno in Campo dei Fiori or on the benches in the garden of Largo Cairoli.
